Ornate mirror on a table with flowers, draped curtain in background. Text reads "The Mirror," "Nine Little Hauntings," "jensequel.com." Mysterious vibe.

✨ Nine Little Hauntings ✨

A series from The Hollow—brief encounters with the uncanny, where the ordinary twists and the quiet lingers a little too long.

“The higher you climb, the closer you are to the ones above.”

Lila never went into the attic. Not without good reason. And never for very long.

Yet every morning the small casement window was open. And every morning, she closed and locked the pane.

One night, she stayed up late, eyes focused on the attic access door, straining to hear any noise from above.

At first, there was nothing and she felt silly for even suspecting anything. Yet after she turned off the light, she heard faint footsteps and the echo of laughter above. Soft enough for her to doubt her ears.

She gained enough courage to climb up the stairs and open the attic access door a crack – just enough to peek inside.

The noise stopped and she pushed the door open further to step inside the attic.

The window was open, and she hurried to look outside. Tiny handprints were pressed against the glass, fading even as she watched. Outside there was no sign of passage. No ladder nor rooftop to gain entry, merely a straight drop all the way down three stories.

When she closed and locked the window and turned to leave, the access door was shut, leaving only silence and the faint scent of old cedar.

Shadows pressed against glass never stay. They slip down into bookshelves, waiting for the right page to open.
