Book Review: Erebus-13 by David Wellington

I didn’t realize when I picked up Erebus-13 that it was actually the third book in David Wellington’s Red Space trilogy. The good news is that Wellington does a solid job of writing this installment in a way that allows readers to follow the story without feeling completely lost if they haven’t read the previous books.

The story follows Petrova and her crew as they face the release of Erebus, an ancient entity of pure darkness threatening humanity and the galaxy itself. What begins as a mission of survival becomes a desperate attempt to unite the fractured factions of the solar system before it’s too late.

Going into the book, I was expecting more of a horror experience, but Erebus-13 leans much more heavily into science fiction. That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing—once I adjusted my expectations, I found it to be an enjoyable sci-fi adventure with elements of horror woven throughout.

After reading some reviews of the earlier books in the trilogy, it sounds like the first installment contains more of the horror atmosphere I was originally expecting. I may have to go back and read the rest of the series from the beginning to see how the story builds and where those darker elements come into play.

Overall, Erebus-13 was an enjoyable read. While it wasn’t quite the horror novel I anticipated, it delivered a compelling sci-fi adventure and left me curious enough to explore the rest of the Red Space trilogy.
