Book Review: Chain Reaction by Lee Child and Andrew Child

Person reads an open book on autumn leaves; text says Sequels Book Nook and Chain Reaction by Lee Child, Andrew Child.

If you're looking for a good mystery with plenty of intrigue and a protagonist who knows how to get things done, Chain Reaction delivers exactly what you'd expect from a Jack Reacher novel.

Blue book cover with large CHAIN REACTION title, Lee Child and Andrew Child text, and a black silhouette of Reacher.

Reacher is called upon by General Susan Turner, who needs help investigating the brutal murder of a member of her team. With trust in short supply and danger lurking at every turn, Reacher heads to Summertown, Colorado, a remote and unusual place hiding more than a few secrets. What follows is a trail of clues, suspicious characters, and a mystery that gradually unfolds as Reacher works his way toward the truth.

This is a solid addition to the Jack Reacher series.

What I particularly enjoyed was the way the mystery develops, clue by clue. There's a satisfying sense of discovery as the pieces begin to come together, keeping you invested in figuring out what's really happening. Reacher is exactly the kind of character you'd expect: determined, observant, and not someone you want standing in your way.

I've only read the first book in the series, so I can't compare Chain Reaction to the other novels or comment on the return of familiar characters. However, I never felt as though I was missing out on something by jumping ahead. The story stands well on its own, making it accessible even if you're relatively new to Reacher's world.

And that, to me, is always a plus. You don't necessarily have to start at the beginning of a long-running series to enjoy a good story.

If you're already a Jack Reacher fan, this is another mystery to add to your reading list. If you're new to the series, it could be a good place to start, too.

As for me? I'll be catching up on the rest of the Reacher novels soon, I'm sure!
