Books for Readers Who Love Haunted Houses

A typewriter holds a paper reading "Books for Readers Who Love Haunted Houses" with the website "jensequel.com" in the corner.

There’s something uniquely unsettling about a haunted house story. It’s not just about ghosts, it’s about the way house seems to listen, the very walls breathe, and the unnerving feeling that you are not alone.

For readers drawn to the macabre, haunted house books blend the perfect balance of atmosphere and dread. If you are looking to fill your shelves with a few stories that will leave you checking the dark shadows and sleeping with the lights on, here are some essential reads.

The Gold Standard of Haunted Houses

Book cover of "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson. Features stylized yellow plants and a house silhouette against a dark background.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

No haunted house list is complete without this masterpiece. Hill House is less a setting and more a living entity. It twists perception, isolating its inhabitants, and quietly unraveling the mind.

Jackson’s prose is precise and haunting, making this a must-read for anyone who loves psychological horror wrapped in elegance.

Hell House by Richard Matheson

If Hill House is subtle and psychological, Hell House is its darker, more visceral counterpart. Matheson leans into the brutality of hauntings—physical, emotional, and spiritual—creating a story that feels dangerous to read alone at night.

Modern Haunted House Favorites

The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell

A crumbling estate, eerie wooden figures, and a creeping sense of madness—this one is pure gothic dread with a historical twist.

Woman in burgundy dress holds bouquet. Background: green pattern. Text: Mexican Gothic, New York Times bestseller by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

A decaying mansion in the Mexican countryside hides secrets that go far beyond ghosts. Lush, stylish, and deeply unsettling.

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

A modern smart home meets classic gothic tension. Is the house haunted—or is something far more human at work?

Haunted Spaces with a Dark Academia Mood

These stories blur the line between intellectual obsession and supernatural intrusion—perfect for readers who love candlelit study sessions and unsettling introspection.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Secret societies, ghostly remnants, and Yale’s shadowy underbelly. Not a traditional haunted house, but the atmosphere absolutely fits.

If You Love Lingering Hauntings…

I would be remiss if I didn’t discuss my own works and not just the books that inspired me to write horror. Hauntings are one of my favorite sub-genres both in book and movies. I have always strived to create the unsettling presence afforded by others. Here are a few of mine I would suggest along this line.

A stately mansion under a dark sky, tree roots visible in the foreground. Text: Eleanor's Garden by Jen Sequel, Collector's Edition.

A story that moves beyond a simple haunting of spirits within the walls. It delves into the estate itself but doesn’t stop within the walls. Rather it spreads into the gardens beyond demanding a toll.

A more traditional haunted house narrative, where the setting itself plays an active role in unraveling what’s real and what isn’t. My first foray into the genre – 101 Hilltop Drive goes beyond spirits and taps into something more primeval.

A confined, intimate haunting…with a twist. Perfect for readers who love the idea that even the smallest spaces can carry something deeply unsettling.

The best haunted house stories aren’t really about ghosts. They’re about presence—about what refuses to leave, what lingers in silence, and what patiently waits in the dark.

Whether you prefer the psychological unease of The Haunting of Hill House or the raw intensity of Hell House, these stories remind us of one thing:

Some houses don’t just stand still.

They watch. They remember. And sometimes… they invite you in.
